“What is affiliate marketing?”
This is a question I get a lot from people, so allow me to take the opportunity to discuss with you what affiliate marketing is and why it makes sense to be an affiliate marketer.
Affiliate Marketing Definition
Perhaps the simplest way to define affiliate marketing is as a process of earning a commission via the promotion of other people’s or company’s products or services. This means you don’t necessarily have to own a company or have products or services to sell to be a successful affiliate marketer.
To be more specific, affiliate marketing is a process that involves a merchant, a network, a publisher, and a customer. Some think of the network, which works as a link between the merchant and the affiliate, as only optional since you can always promote and sell a product online and just have a direct agreement with the merchant regarding revenue share.
However, I believe that letting a network take care of the product delivery and payment makes things more convenient for both parties.
Affiliate Marketing Basics
While affiliate marketing involves four parties, it often comes down to just two when it comes to the actual marketing process, which are the merchant and the affiliate.
The merchant is also known as the seller or the retailer. It can be the creator, too, since it’s the one that creates the product. The merchant is not limited to being a large company or business, though. I can be a merchant and you can be a merchant. Anyone can be a merchant as long as they have a legitimate product to sell.
Whether you’re a large manufacturing company or a solo entrepreneur, you can be a merchant in an affiliate marketing program. You don’t even have to be actively involved in the program for you to be a successful merchant. Again, the only qualification is that you have a product or service to sell.
And then there’s the affiliate. Just like the merchant, the affiliate could either be a single individual, a small business, or a huge organization. Depending on the type of product and affiliate program, the affiliate can earn a few dollars to millions of dollars or more each month in commissions.
Finally, there’s the customer or the consumer. Without them, the entire affiliate marketing system won’t work.
What an affiliate does is promote one or several products by a merchant and convince potential customers of the value and significance of the products, so they end up purchasing it. The affiliate uses whatever medium they see fit for marketing the products, whether via a blog, a vlog, or a social network.
Which Side to Pick
You’ve probably realized by now that you can either become a merchant or an affiliate in this equation called affiliate marketing. Regardless of which side you pick, you can be sure to enjoy the benefits of affiliate marketing, which are as follows:
It’s a lucrative industry. Have I told you already that affiliate marketing is a billion-dollar industry? That’s right. There is simply no limit to the type of products you can use and promote to an audience. Whether you’re passionate about health, sports, music, or photography, you can rest assured that there’s that one product out there with which you can earn a commission.
It’s a cheap business opportunity. They say starting a business always requires a huge sum of money. Not so with affiliate marketing. As long as you have a computer and an internet connection, you can start any time you want.
It requires no expertise. Becoming a successful affiliate marketer does not require you to be an affiliate marketing expert in the first place. Sure, you will need to learn the basics and eventually master some skills, but you’re not required to be an expert for you to start your campaign. I knew very little about business and internet marketing when I started and simply grew my skills along the way. There’s also no need for you to worry about marketing kits because they are provided by the merchants most of the time.
3 Steps to Become an Affiliate Marketer
While there are two sides to the affiliate marketing equation, the more common and easier path is becoming an affiliate. It’s the more attractive route since not all who want to make money online usually have a product to sell. Affiliate marketing offers these kinds of people the opportunity to make money even when they don’t have any business to start with.
If you want to become an affiliate marketer, which is a good choice if you’re asking me, there are three simple steps you can follow.
Step 1: Choose a product you want to talk about.
Affiliate marketers have an advantage over merchants when it comes to taking the first step because, for merchants, their first step is to create a product idea, which may take a little of time and effort. All that an affiliate marketer has to do, on the other hand, is to review products they are already using and then pick one they want to talk about and sell.
Step 2: Have a list of potential people you want to sell to.
Once you’ve decided which product you want to promote and sell, your next step is to build an email list via your blog or website. This is one of the most important aspects of affiliate marketing so make sure you don’t skip it. You don’t need to have a huge list. You can start with a list of 500 prospects and then gradually build up from there.
Step 3: Start talking about your product.
The third step is promoting the product you’ve decided to sell. You can do this in several ways, such as write a review of the product, create a video of you reviewing the product, or do live webinars where you do a live presentation of the product in action. As for me, I combine these three, depending on what type of product I’m promoting at the moment.
